CSA

CSA Travel Protection offers competitive vacation insurance, cruise insurance, trip cancellation insurance, and medical travel insurance policies.

Their products are competitively priced and they offer some very comprehensive trip cancellation and interruption coverages.  They are one of the few companies that use more factors than just your age and cost of trip to calculate your premium.  Things such as destination, trip type and elapse of time between buying the insurance and when you depart all factor into the premium.  As a result small changes to their plans may result in a change of premium.

CSA most popular policies are their Custom and Custom Luxe plans.  Although it does not offer a pre-existing medical conditions waiver, the Custom plan is one of the best entry level plans available while the Custom Luxe plan is one of the best high end plans that offers a "waiver of pre-existing medical conditions" if the plan is purchased on or before the final planned payment date.

CSA is located in San Diego, CA and was established in 1991.  In 2008 they were purchased by Europ Assistance Group, a worldwide assistance services company owned by Generali Group of Italy, a Global 500 entity.

Worked well

Used CSA for a number of trips out of the country. Had to cancel once and had some medical issues on two other trips. No problems with service or reimbursement.

Fine coverage -- as long as you don't actually make a claim

Very disappointing. Purchased CSA travel Insurance. Then, before trip, our doctor said that medical condition mandated that my granddaughter should not now travel. CSA were polite but simply refused to cover our claim, explaining that the fine print indicated that this condition was not covered. So, doctor said we couldn't go and CSA said tough luck. So, I feel ripped off by insurance that sounds fine, as long as you don't make a claim.

Pathetic situation of a traveler trapped – Doesn’t make sense to buy their travel policy. NEVER BUY.

CSA Travel Claim – Pathetic situation of a traveler trapped – Doesn’t make sense to buy their travel policy. NEVER BUY.
Until now I have not escalated and reviewed any product in social media/public websites, but situation pushed me to do so. So that someone else will be benefited not BUY CSA Travel Policy.

I bought CSA travel protection when I was travelling from California to Maryland(IDA) on Sep 16th 2016 with my four-member family, the travel protection which I bought includes
? Baggage Delay - DON’T BUY IT for one-way TRIP. THEY WILL TRAP YOU.
? Baggage Coverage – VERY MINIMAL AMOUNT THEY WILL GIVE YOU FOR CLAIM
? Travel Delay
Unfortunately, the flight which we travelled delayed 2hrs and also we lost all the language bags (4), we spent 2-3hours in airport for find the bags and the airline company confirmed that the baggage is lost and they are not able to track it. They informed me that they will contact me when the bags found and send to the hotel address given. I did not receive the bags for 2 days where I was living in hotel, since we did not have any extra pair of dress, we end up in buying the immediate items mainly dress. When I bought the CSA protection plan, it was clear in the policy that they will cover any expense due to the delay such as buying immediate personnel items. I have submitted the bill for very limited items which I bought which is less than $200. They have denied the claim with reason that the Baggage delay is cover only till we reach the final destination, as I booked one-way ticket and moved to this city new, I did not have anything here in Maryland and ended up buying stuff. But their policy say that it cancels when you touch land. Funny yeah!! I followed up with the CSA 20 more times by email or calling, meanwhile the claim contact person has resigned from CSA and NOBODY was responding to my email or CALL. Finally, I called up their customer care number and requested to speak with manager, after couple of days CSA manager contacted me and said that my claim cannot be processed because I bought Baggage Delay protection which will end WHEN I GET OUT OF PLANE??? WHAT DOES IT MAKE SENSE? should I stay in the plain till the claim submit????????? WHAT IS THE USE OF THIS POLICY IF I TRAVLLED ONLY ONE-WAY???? IT IS UTTER WASTE with their condition. I requested multiple time and the manager responded with rude manger that it is not possible to process my claim. He said if you want to take it further action with anybody. you can go ahead. I do not have any way to spend money on hiring a lawyer. However, I want to make sure CSA should know their floppy system and nobody should have trapped.
My dear fellow future travelers, request you to avoid this guys unless they change their policy or you do not have any other options.

END
Below are the policy clause and money which I spend.
The policy purchased provides Baggage Delay coverage and states it "will reimburse you, up to the amount shown in the Schedule, for the cost of reasonable additional clothing and personal articles purchased by you, if your Baggage is delayed for 24 hours or more during your Trip. We will reimburse you up to the amount shown in the Schedule for expenses incurred during your Trip to locate/track your delayed Baggage, and to retrieve your delayed Baggage or to have your delayed Baggage delivered to you. We will also reimburse you for the cost to launder your clothing during the time your Baggage is delayed". However, the policy also states "This coverage terminates when your Baggage is retrieved or returned to you, or upon your arrival at the return destination of your Trip, whichever occurs first". Unfortunately, as your flight was a one-way flight, Washington is considered your return destination, there were no actual out-of-pocket expenses, and there are no provisions in the policy offering benefits for the value of the items you were unable to use during the delay. As such, there are also no benefits payable for this portion of the claim.

CSA is a FRAUD/SCAM

I made the mistake of buying CSA travel insurance for many of my trips over the years, until this last one that I had to cancel due to emergency hospitalization, and my claim was denied. CSA only collects premiums but will not pay your claim, BEWARE!!! Don't go by these A+ ratings. Maybe A+ for scamming consumers! They don't deserve a "1" rating either but that's the lowest available.
I'm filing a complaint with Better Business Bureau, Court of Claims, etc... and will go all the way to run these crooks out of business, not because of the amount of $ involved, but because I want to stop them from scamming others.
Joey Ramelli in CSA Claims department is rude, and his manager never returned my call. They are in it together, and should rot in jail.

Horrible insurance

Rented a home in Florida for a family vacation through Southern Rentals and purchased the insurance. Four weeks after renting we found out our daughter was pregnant and was informed by her doctor not to travel to this area for fear of the Zyka virus. After contacting CSA we were told our claim was denied because they do not consider the Zyka virus a reason for cancellation. They would rather we go on vacation and take the chance. I would never recommend CSA and would warn everyone to check the insurance carrier before making any rentals. I guess CSA would rather see babies become infected before paying out a claim.

Editor's Note: Trip cancellation coverage only covers those specific perils listed in the policy unless you purchase a plan that also has "cancel for any reason" coverage. Fear of getting a disease is not currently covered in any trip cancellation plan that is available in the USA.

Good customer service

We purchase travel insurance for cruises. We had to cancel a cruise and rebook. CSA allowed us to keep the insurance for the new trip for an additional fee which we did. We have used CSA many times. We had one small claim for an MD visit which they paid the difference after our insurance paid. The rep was very nice and made everything easy for us.

Liars fraud and fakes

Terrible company that won't pay claim because if you have had pneumonia before and then get stage 4 cancer then the pneumonia is allegedly a pre existing condition to the stage 4 cancer. Even though the cancer wasn't diagnosed until weeks later

Medical Claim

My wife twisted/broke her ankle on the 29 Oct. 2014, in Monemvasia, Greece. The ship's doctor wrapped her ankle, provided crutches and suggested we xray the ankle in Athens. We skipped the xray and continued our trip. After returning to the US, we consulted a doctor who performed surgery on the 11 Nov.. A claim was submitted to CSA by email on 17 Nov. along with the name of our primary insurance carrier for coordination of benefits. We were unaware CSA does not honor assignment of benefits to third parties but only reimburses the insured for paid expenses. Expenses were submitted CSA for reimbursement over the next five months but no partial payments were forthcoming. I talked to/emailed the claims rep. on multiple occassions who said the delay in reimbursement was due to coordination of benefits with my primary insurance carrier. I copied all of the records of my primary carriers payments and sent them to rep but still no payment. Finally, after being told the check was in the mail on two occassions, I contacted the manager of claims on the 21 July, explained the problem with the claims rep. I received a check a few days later for all expenses incurred. I am not sure what the problem was with the claims rep. but CSA paid are claim in full. I would buy insurance from them again.

CSA Travel Protection Review

While traveling in Russia, my wife stumbled on a cobblestone and injured her ankle. We could not have asked for more in the way of response by CSA. We made an appointment at the American Clinic in St. Petersburg. The insurance company contacted the clinic in advance and posted a payment voucher that covered all of the costs of the clinic visit and the necessary wheelchair. After reviewing the clinic's medical report CSA arranged for my wife to upgraded to business class for her return trip to the U.S.A. They also arranged limousine service to provide transportation from the airport to our hotel upon return. This support was freely offered without our having to ask. Overall, CSA's performance was superb.

Canceled trip wasn't covered with Trip Cancellation Insurance

CSA is horrible. I purchased trip cancelation insurance for a dive trip we had planned. Right before the trip, all the guys backed out so I called to ensure I would be covered before submitting a claim. I was led to believe I would be covered so I submitted a claim, which was easy but they denied the claim. Horrible company.

Editors Note: Trip cancellation coverage is a "named peril" coverage. Having your travel companions cancel might not be a covered reason unless they have cancelled due to a "named peril".

Misleading Policy stay Away from This Company

I am insured the day before my travel. The online application neither showed the total amount of the charge nor reflected to my credit account immediately. When I saw that they charged more than $400 for my payment on the sixth day of the insurance coverage I called to stop. They refused it although it was written in ten days we can refuse it.The costumer service told me that since I began to trip they couldn't stop it according to their policy. Then why did not they reflect and show the total amount when we finished application. There was a trick and we fell down. Don't use this insurance company which will not show you the total amount immediately when you finish the application.

Please do not waste your money

Please do not spend your money on insurance from this company! We spent over $200.00 for trip cancellation insurance for a 2 week stay in Emerald Isle North Carolina. We just found out that our 13 year old dog has cancer and it has spread to her lungs. We are giving her chemotherapy daily at home and she is very fragile. We called and submitted our claim and all the required documentation. Immediately CSA called us and denied the claim. They said they do not cover animals- but family members. This dog is a family member. I asked for an appeal and was told there was no real "appeal process" ( ???) but I could ask for one and it would be " kicked upstairs for a review." I did file the appeal and immediately received a denial in the mail. I guess it got " kicked upstairs" very quickly. I know some people would not consider the family dog a " family member" but I hope I never become one of those people. We will be here for our dog but now have lost over $1500.00 when we foolishly thought we would have trip cancellation insurance when we paid for it. Please look at other online reviews and see all the heart aches and disappointments this company has caused.

Editors note: Trip cancellation coverage is very specific as to what it covers and who is covered. One has to carefully read the policy prior to purchase to make sure the policy will cover their main concerns. In this case the only coverage that might have applied would have been "cancel for any reason" which is a time sensitive benefit and usually has a large co-payment clause.

Refused to Cover Claim; Foreseeable Illness was NOT foreseeable

I purchased a Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruise, with a departure date of July 1st. In May, everyone in our household became sick with the common cold after traveling north for a wedding in the middle of May.

My grandmother, who has NO PRE-EXISTING conditions with the exception arthritis also came down with the cold, which turned into pneumonia. She was hospitalized in May and then released into rehab so she could get stronger before coming home. She had come down with pneumonia times before, recovered and been released.

On the evening of 6/22/2015, we requested that the rehab center take her to the hospital so she could received the proper treatment and medicines.

On 6/23/2015, I purchased an travel insurance policy from CSA just in case I needed to come back while I was on the Cruise. The effective date of my policy was 6/24/2015, 12:01 am.

On the evening of 6/24/2015, at approximately 10:00 pm we received an unexpected call from the hospital saying that my grandmother's blood pressure had suddenly dropped exceptionally low, and that we should go. The doctor specifically said that they aren't positive anything was going to happen, but we should go just in case. Her blood pressure was normal earlier that day.

Unfortunately, I watched my grandmother take her last breath at 5:00 am the morning of 6/25/2015.

Today on 7/23/2015, I received a letter from CSA denying my claim stating "The effective date of your policy is 6/24/2015, and the medical documentation provided by the doctor indicates that the illness that caused your non traveling family member's death occurred before your effective date. As the illness did not occur after your policy became effective, and is considered foreseeable and therefore is specifically excluded from coverage, no benefits are payable for your claim."

I contacted the Claims Agent, Joey Ramelli who just argued with me the entire time about why I purchased insurance so close to my travel date and that her illness was foreseeable. Rude and useless. Exactly what I needed after dealing with a death in the immediate family.Seriously? She had pneumonia many times before and successfully recovered, and her death was NOT foreseeable. Apparently, you're supposed to be Nostradamus and predict someone will die from an illness to get your claim benefit paid. Terrible customer service. I recommend you seek other insurance options very carefully, before going with CSA.
